Choosing the right moment
01When is the best time to contact RSC for a Java assessment?
Ideally, contact RSC before evaluating or negotiating a new Oracle Java agreement, before renewing an existing agreement, major infrastructure change, acquisition, divestiture or response to Oracle. Starting early gives your team time to validate evidence, compare options and act deliberately. If the situation is already urgent, RSC can still scope a focused first phase.
Should we wait until Oracle contacts us?
No. A proactive assessment generally gives you more control over timing, stakeholders and remediation. It can replace assumptions with a defensible baseline before evaluating or negotiating a new Oracle Java agreement, renewing an existing agreement, making a procurement decision or entering a time-sensitive vendor conversation.
Who should be involved from our organisation?
Most assessments benefit from a small working group spanning ITAM or SAM teams, infrastructure and end-user computing teams, cloud or container teams, procurement or vendor management, security, finance and key application owners.
Can RSC help if Oracle has already contacted us?
Yes. RSC can help organise facts, preserve evidence, assess the technical and commercial position, and support a measured response strategy. Avoid making hurried estate changes or factual representations until your internal team understands the request, scope and evidence position.
Consultancy Service (optional paid professional service)
For customers who require a more intensive engagement, RSC can provide an additional Consultancy Service that includes:
- Specialist Oracle Java licensing insights and guidance.
- Unlimited email exchanges during the agreed engagement period.
- Support for Oracle negotiations or audit defence, using Javidence's verified Effective Licence Position (ELP) results to assess and challenge Oracle's position or quotation.
This optional professional service is scoped and charged separately.
Preparing your evidence
02What should we prepare before the assessment?
To get started, all you need is a basic list of your servers and desktop endpoints.
What if our Java inventory is incomplete or unreliable?
An incomplete Java inventory is exactly where Javidence adds value. Javidence only needs a list of the servers and desktop endpoints within scope to begin. Javidence scans those systems directly to discover Java installations—including installations that may be missing from existing SAM, CMDB or software-inventory records—and connects each finding to supporting technical evidence.
Does every Java installation require an Oracle commercial licence?
No. The position can depend on the Java publisher and distribution, version and update, how and where it is used, the applicable licence terms, existing entitlements and any bundled-product rights. A proper assessment is therefore required to classify each installation into an evidence-backed scenario rather than treating every Java record alike.
Which environments can the assessment cover?
Javidence can assess Java across all major enterprise environments, including:
- Windows, Linux and macOS operating systems.
- Physical and virtual servers.
- Desktop and laptop endpoints.
- Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
- Public and private cloud environments.
- Running containers and selected container-registry images.
- Supported third-party software inventory and SBOM evidence.
The entire assessment can be run in an air-gapped environment, so no assessment data leaves your environment.
How the engagement works
03How does RSC protect our data?
The preferred model is customer-controlled and air-gapped: your team runs the agreed discovery process while the assessment data stays inside your environment.
How long does an assessment take?
Timing depends on estate size, environment diversity, access constraints and stakeholder availability.
What will we receive at the end?
Deliverables are confirmed during scoping and may include a normalised Java inventory, application and runtime context, licence scenario analysis, an executive view of exposure and options, prioritised remediation actions, and traceable technical evidence supporting each conclusion.
What happens after the assessment?
Your team chooses the path forward. That may include validating changes, removing unnecessary exposure, planning alternative runtimes, preparing a renewal or negotiation position, and establishing governance so the evidence stays current.
Javidence, fees and independence
04What is Javidence?
Javidence is RSC's purpose-built, end-to-end Oracle Java assessment platform. It is agentless and goes above and beyond standard SAM tools with advanced discovery that accurately identifies each detected Java installation by vendor, version, distribution and runtime.
Javidence then couples this with its unique application-aware context to help assess whether a particular Java installation is required by one or more applications or may be a candidate for safe removal.
The findings are normalised into an explainable Effective Licence Position (ELP), helping customers understand what was found, why it matters and what action to take.
Javidence provides a more detailed and defensible Java assessment than most general-purpose SAM tools. It combines discovery, evidence, licensing logic, advanced analysis and complex decision support in one assessment workflow.
Javidence can also operate in a customer-controlled, air-gapped environment without an internet connection, so the customer's assessment data remains inside their environment. Explore Javidence →
How much do Javidence and RSC professional services cost?
Unlike similar providers that license their products through subscriptions, Javidence is offered under a perpetual licence.
Pricing is based on the number of managed assets. A managed asset is a unique endpoint—whether a physical server or a virtual instance.
Javidence uses tiered pricing, with rates decreasing as managed-asset volumes increase.
The rate can be as low as SGD 2.50 per managed asset.
